Become an apprentice with Story Homes
Ryan Gilmour is an Apprentice joiner at Story Homes. Here we have his story and why he chose this career path.
What does your department do?
I work for the Production team who are responsible for managing the build of our quality homes. I specifically work on site at Summerpark in Scotland as a joiner following the successful completion of my apprenticeship.
What do you do on a day-to-day basis as an Apprentice?
As an apprentice it was all about learning my trade. I would carry many different tasks which allow me as a qualified joiner to perform a range of jobs on site. These include first floor joists and roofs to hanging doors and fitting facings and skirting’s.
What do you like about being an apprentice?
The variety. No two days are the same and it’s great to work as part of a team. I also get the opportunity to work independently now that I know my trade.
Why did you choose this career?
I chose this career as I have always been interested in construction. This then led to me building an interest in design, craft and graphics in school.
What qualifications did you need to get this job?
I worked hard at school and gained good grades but the main thing is to find an employer who will support you to learn. That’s why an apprenticeship was great for me. As I learnt I was able to gain valuable experience on site as well as get paid.
