FirstGroup: More Than Just An Application Form
With thousands of students applying for a place on thousands of graduate programmes across the country, it’s no wonder graduate employers are vying for their attention. Today’s graduate market is a highly competitive one, both for employers and students alike. As employers work hard to make their opportunities stand out, student’s must realise that they have to do the same. The way in which they present the quality of skills and knowledge they can offer employers is a skill in itself.
At FirstGroup, Paul Siaens (Group Graduate Resourcing Partner) speaks about what is important. “It is more important that our candidates are able to showcase their strengths and skills throughout our selection process. We add more value to this than we do to the degree they have on offer.”
When applying for graduate roles, it is vital that students research both the technical and non-technical characteristics required. Equally students need to understand where and how these will be assessed. These days, good application processes have several elements, and not just an online form or CV. There are many tools out there that are being used by employers, designed to give a candidate an insight into an organization and vice versa.
“My advice would be to research the people and culture as much as the role or programme. Understanding what it is like to work in the organization will really help you align to the right company and role,” says Paul. “Making sure you are able to show how you ‘fit’ is important. At FirstGroup we are very safety and customer focused, supporting each other to succeed. Without these attributes you won’t get along well with our selection process.”
In the end, remember that employers expect loyalty. They invest in graduate development to create internal talent pipelines that will serve their needs in the longer term. To be successful you must be able to see yourself there for longer than the graduate programme. So, know the organisation right from the start and show your ‘fit’ throughout the selection process.
