More graduates going for SMEs

Finished university last year, or graduating this year? Where did you end up after you finished?

Recent news has suggested that Small to Medium Enterprises (SME’s) have been missing out on quality talent from Graduates.
Totaljobs.com reported that the uncovered talent could account for 196,000 jobs in the SME employment market.
According to recent statistics, 9 out of 10 graduates would like to work for a SME. The most popular reasons being :

  • 62% believe that SMEs develop their work experience in a better way
  • 65% stated that their ideas are more likely to be heard
  • 37% stated that the company culture would suit them better.

It’s often the perception that working for a blue corporate giant is a scary world, especially fresh out of university.  SMEs are viewed to have a more relaxed environment, more team work and more getting your hands dirty with multi-tasking and more ownership and responsibility.

Many graduates find large corporate companies intimidating, 29% of graduates belive they have the right skills for a job in a SME, compared to a mere 10% feeling confident enough to buff their shiny shoes and enter the glass doors of a large corporate company.
Over 51% of graduates would take the plunge to set up their own business. The term ‘be-your-own-boss’ is becoming increasing popular and it becoming a new trend for graduates #entrepreneur.

So, where do you fit in? Would you rather work in an SME or a large corporate? Comment below.
