The Kick Off: Bright Futures’ Annual Committee Training Conference 2018

Start as you mean to go on - the lowdown on the Committee Training Conference 2018 is here. And what a way to kick-start the year!

So, what went down?

Every year we host a day-long conference where we invite forward the whole Bright Futures Committee Member network, the MyKindaFuture Universities Team, our employer network, to meet one another and participate in interactive and exclusive training sessions. And this year, we did just that in Birmingham, specifically the Snow Hill offices of KPMG who decided to very kindly host – and what a venue!

Who was there?

Tuesday 18th September saw 37 Committee Members from 13 universities, as well as 5 leading graduate employers represented. And what’s even better, our Committee network is growing to be more diverse and professional than ever before – 72% of our Committee attendees were female, 49% represented the BAME student network, 46% were second year students and 33% had only just begun university.

What were the highlights?

  • Committee Members came together for training sessions surrounding goal setting, using their own personalised connectr websites, marketing and social media skills, and event management.
  • We brainstormed the visions for the year, with our Committees thinking about what they would like to achieve by our Awards Ceremony.
  • Speed networking with representatives from Civil Service, MVF, First Group, Npower and of course KPMG to find out exclusive, first-hand insight into upcoming opportunities and life within each firm.
  • KPMG delivered two insightful sessions surrounding their inclusion and diversity values, followed with a skills workshop on effective networking.
  • Informal networking drinks afterwards!

What did our Committee Members think of the event?

“Great exposure to a variety of industries and insights into graduate scheme application processes and the way companies worked.”

“As I have never been a member of Bright Futures before becoming a committee member, it was really useful for me to be able to talk to the other committees and gain some insight/tips on what does and does not work when planning and running events.”

“I found hearing about the graduates’ stories and certain things they had to overcome, to be particularly enlightening as it shows there is a path but you have to be persistent.”

“I think it was important to have the Goal Setting Training Session to begin with as it shows clearly what we aim to achieve and once you have a plan and realistic goals. It motivates you to achieve them”

What lies ahead for the Bright Futures’ year?

Well, we are really pleased to say our Committees are already getting their first events planned, some of which are already live on our Events Page or on your Bright Futures Society’s connectr – check it out! We are working closely with our Committees to make sure they achieve their very best potential this year. Make sure you are following your Society’s social media channels to stay in the know with their events, keep an eye out for our upcoming events (e.g. Black History Month Panel & Networking Event, 15th October), upcoming corporate Insight Days and the opening of applications to graduate and internship schemes.

We are very excited to say the least!
