Here we have Andrew and Jenny, who tell us why they think the npower Energy Challenge is great....
The energy challenge is an amazing opportunity to build your personal skills, develop your CV and gain experiences of presenting to senior management. Entering the competition will make you stand out from the competition should you want to apply for a career in the ever evolving, challenging and competitive energy industry. The competition is highly regarded by recruitment specialists at npower.
Jenny and Andrew won the competition in 2011 as Chemical Engineering Students for the University of Birmingham. Both Jenny and Andrew went on to work for RWE in RWE npower retail and RWE generation. In 2013 they hosted the Energy Challenge Final at The Royal Institute, London.
Andrew’s Energy Challenge Competition Summary;
I completed the RWE npower Energy Challenge during my 3rd year at university. For me it was a great opportunity to gain experience of the world outside university. I learnt an enormous amount; not only about the energy industry, but also about the world of business. I found the Energy Challenge to be a great place to develop my presentation techniques, and my team was really well supported through the process. Having presented our idea at the heat stage, we were allocated a mentor who gave us excellent feedback and enabled us to steer the presentation towards what the judges at the final would be looking for.
The networking opportunities at the event were also really valuable – and fruitful. There were high profile people amongst the audience both internal and external to npower, who took the time after the event to talk to the competitors. Through this networking I gained a placement working in London in energy policy which was invaluable to my development as an engineer.
Jenny’s npower experience;
It was a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging competition. The Energy Challenge isn’t just about the skills you learn from participating in the competition but it offers a great insight into the career options available in an exciting, challenging and innovative energy market.
Winning the competition in 2011 helped me to secure a summer placement at npower and later on to the bespoken graduate scheme. For my summer placement I worked for Energy Services working within product development on the solar PV portfolio, analysising the market.
Having completed my final year at University I went on to join the company in September 2012 as a graduate on the bespoken graduate scheme. I’ve been involved with a variety of challenging projects across a range of different areas of the business. In my first placement in Metering Services I was involved in contract managing and analysising one of our meter providers. My second placement in Green Deal and Obligations as a marketing executive saw me launch an employee referral scheme to encourage our employees to help their friends and family to free home energy saving measures. My current role working in the Domestic Care and Maintenance side of the business involves a project to realign a team of quality analysts to audit the customer journey, aimed at improving customers satisfaction and getting it right for our customers.
