Tips for travelling on a budget this summer
Summer is here. The sun is shining (sometimes), the days are longer, the university year and everything that comes with it has finished for a few months - you’ve made it to the other side.
Now time to plan to summer break of dreams. Well, as far as a student budget gets you in way of that. Is it even possible to have a decent summer with a small fund? Answer: yes it is! And we have a guide that will help you have a scorcher without breaking the bank…
Consider the trip as a whole. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking about only the flight and your accommodation when considering travel budget, but what about spending money/living costs once you’re there? And in some destinations, £100 will last you 2 hours, and in others it will last you over a week! Sometimes the flight will be the most expensive factor, but will be the only expensive thing – especially in places like South East Asia. Budget for the whole thing, folks.
Take your accommodation down a peg or two. Expensive and swanky hotels may be great but they will swallow your budget very quickly! Consider other options such as hostels, apartments and homestays which will not only be cheaper but will enrich your experience all together by meeting new people and seeing a place much more in-depth. Extra brownie points if you get freebies thrown in.
Consider staying in the UK! From city breaks to seaside cottages, the UK actually has more to offer than what it’s credited for. Although summer weather (and tans) can’t be guaranteed, why not get a group of friends and head down to the coast for the weekend, or explore a new city? You can spend more budget on activities than flights!
Plan ahead. You never know how much you’re going to save by booking a few months in advance – Skyscanner actually has a great app where you can keep an eye on air fayres before they sky-rocket! This will also give you a good amount of time to save up spending money.
Self-cater. Save yourself countless £££ by going self-catering! You can avoid buying extortionate cans of coke (and alcohol) by buying your own and being able to store a hub of all your favourite snacks and drinks is 10x easier in itself.
BUDGET. Unfortunately, it’s true what they say – money doesn’t grow on trees. You need to have a real think about how much finance is going to be required to fulfil plans; ignorance is definitely not bliss when it comes to running out of money halfway through paying for your holiday! Oh... and stick to the budget whilst you're there!
