Where can a career in Technology lead?
My name is Emma Wilkinson and I started working at CGI in August 2015 as a graduate. CGI is the fifth largest independent IT and Business Process service firm in the world.
To be truthful when I started my degree in Computing and Management I found it incredibly difficult and I really disliked the programming. I enjoyed all the other areas of the computing side of my degree and after a lot of persistence I managed to get through my programming modules with a good grade. During my placement year I went to work in a small company where I had real responsibility for real work! I developed a passion of working with the elderly and taught a computer class at a community centre in Loughborough. It was there I developed an application which aided the elderly using the internet and resulted in me graduating with a 1st Class degree.
During my final year, I knew I needed to find a job and I knew I wanted to work in technology but not programming. I applied to Computer Science Undergraduate of the Year Award 2015 run by TargetJobs. I was the runner up in a competition and I was offered a project management role in CGI's Edinburgh office!
When I joined CGI, I was a PMO Resource Analyst for one of CGI’s largest Government accounts. My role consisted of recruiting and managing resources on the project. I gathered requirements from the client, advertised roles, organised CV reviews, set up interviews and take each new person through our onboarding process. Another part of my role was to report to the client on a regular basis about recruitment; producing written reports and face-to-face meetings.
Throughout my time at CGI I have been given opportunities to improve my skills by attending training courses and shadowing people. On the job training is huge part of how I have learned and I am enjoying my current role and look forward to working on a variety of projects as I progress in my career in CGI.
