“You’re hired” – A look inside an RBS Apprenticeship

“You’re hired” – A look inside an RBS Apprenticeship

On the back of the success of National Apprenticeship Week we caught up with Kayleigh Graham who talks about what it’s like to be an apprentice at RBS.

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW 2017) is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, the businesses and the wider economy. Our 2017 programme focuses on how an apprenticeship will help you to develop valuable skills which can help you to go anywhere that you chose in your career.

Kayleigh Graham, a Relationship Team Officer within NatWest Commercial Banking attended an event in January which was hosted by NatWest’s London & South East commercial teams. The event was to celebrate around 50 apprentices benefiting from the bank’s apprenticeship scheme in the region. Kayleigh started her apprenticeship role in October 2015 and enthused that she felt it was “an opportunity to gain access to my dream career that would allow me to begin learning immediately and gain real life experience at the same time.

During the event, the apprentices learned about some of the brands that make up the wider NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland family, how they help customers and the career opportunities they provide. These sessions were given by senior leaders from Coutts, Invoice Finance and Lombard, and were followed by interactive breakout sessions, before entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker Mark Rhodes concluded the day’s activities.

An inside perspective

Kayleigh gave us her insight into the day to day life on the apprenticeship scheme, and where she hoped it would take her career in the long term. As part of her work Kayleigh’s been able to study for her Professional Bankers Certificate, which she acknowledged as being challenging but praised the Bank in the support and encouragement she has been given to help her to pass.

Asked what has been the most rewarding aspect of the scheme so far Kayleigh replied “speaking to customers after dealing with their requests and knowing that my work has really helped them and their business. It creates a great sense of responsibility knowing that my actions have a real impact on businesses in the local area.

Our apprenticeships are designed to offer people a breadth of exposure by helping our customers directly, gaining exposure to different aspects of banking and learning about all the various products and services available to customers. From this they are able to see tangible results in how they can impact their business area during the apprenticeship.

Future goals

Ross McEwan, RBS CEO recently, said: “Traditionally, young people often came to RBS having graduated and while we want to still encourage that, we think we can tap into a whole new pool of talent through offering apprenticeships right across the country. I’m confident their dynamism, values and fresh perspective will make a huge contribution as we look to build a bank focused on customer service.

One question which people entering into our apprenticeship schemes will often ask themselves is where it will take them; Kayleigh mentioned that “one of the best things about the programme is that – providing you pass all exams and complete your qualification – you are guaranteed a full time position at the end of the apprenticeship. For me this is fantastic as I cannot wait to qualify and continue doing the job I’ve come to enjoy so much.

Kayleigh is taking advantage of the scheme and what it can offer her in helping her achieve her own ambitions. It is a testament to Kayleigh for her to offer such praise and optimism about the scheme. Kayleigh’s final thoughts were:

“It really has been the opportunity of a lifetime and I’m so glad I applied.”
