Apprentice Levy: What Next?

Apprentice Levy: What Next?

With almost 20,000 companies impacted by the new Apprenticeship Levy, the key message to take from experienced apprentice recruiters is to focus on how to gain maximum value from the levy, not ‘how do we get our money back’.

Spend the levy for the right reasons. That typically means focus on addressing skills gaps, an ageing workforce, and areas of consistent challenge when it comes to recruitment and retention. Focus your thinking on both new apprentice hires and also developing the skills of your current staff.

The levy and new apprenticeship standards have been introduced to address the UK’s poor productivity and skills gap issues (the UK tracks 19% points below the global average); improve the quality of training and the relevant skills that employers’ need. As part of achieving this outcome, employers must be more demanding of their chosen training providers to deliver this high-quality training.

On average, apprentices earn a lot more in their lifetime, than graduates. Apprentice training is fully accredited and nationally recognised; the new standards focus on skills, knowledge and behaviours. These messages need to be much more clearly, loudly and consistently communicated to parents, teachers and young people.

The levy provides a real opportunity to raise the bar; impact social mobility and strengthen companies’ talent pipeline.
