Channel 4 Pop Up Norwich

Back in May we reported on our successful trip to the coastal town of Bournemouth with the C4 Talent team. We were wowed by a high quality of creative output and left ‘silicone beach’ on a high, eagerly looking forward to our next port of call on the C4 Pop Up national roadshow.

In its search for new, undiscovered talent, Channel 4 is casting the net out wide, visiting locations up and down as well as across the breadth of the country. C4 Pop Up is an outreach programme of skills workshops and challenges for young people aged 16-25. We’re looking for young people who wouldn’t normally gain access to such opportunities, who may be unsure a career in media is for them, or who may be one of this generation’s new ‘bedroom creatives’.

On Wednesday 12 August we visited East Anglia, landing in the historic and vibrant little cathedral city of Norwich. Our location, Open, was once a bank, but this stunning venue is far more impressive on the eye than its historic nature suggests.

Following a start-of-the-art renovation, this landmark building has been transformed from an empty space into a contemporary venue with truly impressive facilities. Besides offering equipment for conference facilities and live entertainment, the venue also boasts recording studios, a media lab, dance studio, nightclub/bar and even a climbing wall. Evidently, our location offered an inspirational setting for our 150 students.

MKF’s talented tutors, Chris, Samantha and Jide, were back alongside TV presenter/producer Trai to host the festivities, including media-based challenges and interactive workshops which focused on TV production, marketing and digital.

Channel 4 staff and local, independent professionals presented an insight into the industry and networked with the aspiring young people. Steve Boulton, CEO at Golden Egg Innovation, has an impressive CV having edited sports shows Match of the Day, Match of the Day Live and Final Score.

Steve lauded the talent on the day, commenting: “It was great to chat to so many attendees during the event and many stayed around to speak afterwards which made it feel extra worthwhile. Several have got in contact so perhaps we'll hatch some Goldeneggers as a result!”

And we agree. As with Bournemouth, the talent was impressive and the ideas generated in such a short period impressed all of the judges. Next we visit Wolverhampton in September, followed by Preston and Glasgow before the year’s end.
