Our Top Five Bright Futures' Events from 2017/18...
This year has been one to remember on many levels. From the calibre of our fantastic committee members, to the digital connections and online presence of our network, to the on campus events hosted, 2017/18 was one of the best academic years yet in the history of Bright Futures. And as we are getting ever so slightly emotional that the year is coming to an end, we’re getting a little sentimental and have had a look at all the events that have taken place, looking upon our societies like proud, uncool parents. And since this was a moment of soppiness, we decided to go even further with it and make a blog post of our top five proud moments. And after reading this, how can you blame us. YOU GUYS.
Anyway, enough blubbing, let’s cut to the chase and see what went down since September…
Strathclyde CV Competition
Date: 27th January 2018
Total attendees: 32
Event summary: Working alongside Rolls-Royce, a leading graduate employer very familiar with our Society at Strathclyde for a number of years, students brought their CV to the event where they learned CV skills, how to tailor their CV to a specific opportunity, and general improvements before the winner was chosen. Networking with Rolls-Royce representatives took place after the event over food, allowing for face-to-face engagement to be a significant part of the event.
Reading Placement Panel
Date: 5th December 2017
Total attendees: 20
Event summary: Representing a selection of large and small companies on campus, Reading Bright Futures hosted a Q&A panel for those interested in doing a placement. Companies were represented by students who had placement experience with them, and so therefore proving a successful event doesn’t always require an employer to be present. Microsoft, Unilever, SAP, Libertine and SocialRetailGroup were represented and overall the event was a fantastic way of connecting with other students on campus who were able to share their placement experience.
Southampton Cisco Workshop
Date: 17th October 2017
Total attendees: 80+
Event summary: Southampton’s committee invited Cisco on to campus to run an interactive workshop of insight into life within the IT sector, the graduate and internship opportunities at Cisco, as well as collaborating with Cisco’s CV Scheme which allowed attendees to apply for their opportunities from their experience of the event and bypass the online testing section of Cisco’s application process. Networking opportunities were also available throughout the event and Cisco provided Dominoes pizza for those who joined.
Manchester Finance Evening
Date: 27th October 2017
Total attendees: 197
Event summary: Our Manchester committee provided students with an insight into the world of Finance from various companies ranging from KPMG to WTW to Barclays and Co-op Bank. Each company had the opportunity to provide a speed, and a Q&A panel for the students to connect with company representatives. A pub networking session was held after the event to provide an informal networking space for everyone over food and drinks. The event was in collaboration with the Accounting Society, BA Econ Society, SOFAB and Student Inspire Network. Fiona Stentaford from Co-op Bank commented: "The event was superb and clearly a lot of preparation and planning had taken place, well organised and put into practice on the evening, and run by really friendly, kind, courteous people. There was a really positive atmosphere."
Leicester Civil Service Interactive Workshop
Date: 11th October 2017
Total attendees: 56
Event summary: Civil Service came onto Leicester’s campus to run an interactive workshop surrounding their graduate and internship opportunities on offer and gave insight into their application process. They were so impressed with the way in which the event was managed by the committee, Civil Service contacted them personally to run a further two events. The committee managed to pull of a very successful second event in less than two days. The success is exemplified in this student’s testimony: “I loved, loved, loved, the Civil Service event and I went to the two that were hosted by Bright Futures, it was so informative interactive. The guest speaker was amazing and even gave emails, I’m still in talks but may be doing a work experience week with him and his team so excited. I would like to thank the Bright Futures team for setting this up. Amazing!”- 3rd year Politics with Sociology student.
….And these are just five examples of a massive range of amazing events from this year. We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge ‘well done’ to all of our committees who have shown ongoing dedication and commitment to not only maintaining an excellent Society but also delivering our overall mission: to give every young person equal power and opportunity to shape their future, which has been demonstrated to new highs this year on campus. And you haven’t just helped us! Your involvement has only added to your own fantasticness.
You guys rock. (Now can you see why we are so proud?!) Here’s to next year!
