After graduation, what comes next?

So you’ve finished university? Firstly, congratulations! It’s a massive achievement to get through those long 3 or 4 years, so well done!

So, what do you do now if you haven’t got a grad scheme waiting for you, and haven’t started looking for a job yet? Your parents might be on your back, people constantly asking you what your plans are, and your friends might even be starting work soon – so what do you do, and where do you start?!

Firstly – don’t panic! You’re fresh out of uni, and although you have some decisions to make, you’re not in any rush – you don’t want to make the wrong ones, so take your time! This is when you need to have a long hard think about what it is that you really want to do. What sort of job do you see yourself doing? What type of company do you want to work for? What industry are you interested in? Check out our 6 surefire ways to work out what career you want to do - this will act as a map to your future.

Next, take a look at your CV. What does it look like? Is it nice and full with activities and responsibilities from university? Or does it need a bit of improvement through gaining some work experience? Why not take a look at some CV Tips and this CV builder on our website to get you started.

If it’s looking a bit sparse then maybe it’s time to seek out some more experience. Volunteering, internships or placements are some great ways to boost your resume. Write to companies, apply online, or chat to family and friends who might give you some connections to employers who can help you out. The work experience could be anything – working in a café, an office, or volunteering in a charity shop or centre – anything that is going to equip you with the skills that employers will be looking for!

Now that you’ve created a kick ass CV, what are you waiting for? Start applying for your dream job! It’s also time to hone your interview skills – try practicing on friends, family, or employees at your work experience placement. Read our blogs on how to make first impressions count, and what to do before an interview – these will get you ready to wow them! Although all the hours of prep and the actual interview can be nerve-racking and stressful, it will all be worth it when you secure that amazing post-grad job – after all, you’ve already got an amazing degree under your belt, so you’re half way there!

All of this sounding a bit too much, too soon? Then why not think about the other options that you have, instead of getting a job straight away after uni?

If you don’t feel like you’re ready for work – whether that be you feeling like you don’t have the right skills, you’re not sure which career to choose, or you’re just not ready to start working yet, there are still options open to you. Why not take some time out to travel, volunteer, or learn something new. All of these things can make you a better, more well-rounded person, and can teach you a lot of skills that you will need in your future career - so don’t dismiss them just because you think you have to get a job right away.
