Spotlight Intern of the Month: Joe from Arqiva

Spotlight Intern of the Month: Joe from Arqiva

Monday, 27th of November

Meet Joe, a previous intern at Arqiva who joined their Corporate Finance programme through MyKindaFuture. Here, he shares his experience of life at Arqiva, life as an Intern and advice to those who may be considering a similar path.

1. How did you hear about the Arqiva Summer Internship Programme?

My dad is a software salesman and had previously attempted to do business with Arqiva, while I was looking for opportunities in summer 2017 he said he was extremely impressed with the company and recommended I apply to their program.

2. What attracted you to the programme?

Due to the timing of the internship, it coincides with the firm’s financial year end, meaning I knew I would be involved heavily in producing the annual report for the firm. I also knew there would be scope to meet people from around the business in my internship and my team were extremely helpful and encouraging for me to meet as many different business units as possible, this gave me a far more rounded experience in my time with Arqiva.

3. Have you always wanted to work in Finance?

As a child I always wanted to be Chef! However, after undertaking my A-levels I found a real interest in Economics, which led me to study to Economics and Finance at University. Upon studying Finance at University I found it to be the perfect balance between the theory of Economics and the Mathematical application.

4. How long did your internship last?

7 weeks, with 1 days training. The rest of the training is on the job.

5. What were the highlights?

One of the best things about my internship is that I can go on the Arqiva website and read their financial reports for 2017 and know that I had a large contribution in the production of them. I also received a message through LinkedIn from the CEO of the company thanking me for work after I had finished my internship, which shows the accessibility of the directors at Arqiva.

6. What were the biggest challenges?

Arqiva as a company has a very complicated financial structure, it took me longer than I anticipated to get my head around it but after a few long nights in week 1, I managed to have a good understanding. This then enabled me to fully understand the work I was doing and progress to gain more responsibility quicker.

7. What’s the best thing about working at Arqiva?

The best thing about Arqiva is the people, the small team I worked in were so friendly, helpful and welcoming, I cannot express how supportive they were to me throughout my time with Arqiva. As well as being lovely people, they are all extremely good at their job, when working at Arqiva you will be working with top industry professionals.

8. How did you find the application process?

The whole process was fairly relaxed, it starts with online questionnaires, then on to a phone interview with some pre-set questions, and finally an assessment day. The assessment day is very relaxed but just remember you are being assessed the whole time.

9. What was your experience of MyKindaFuture?

MyKindaFuture were extremely helpful and professional in any contact I had with them, when I am looking for a graduate role I will defiantly be using MyKindaFuture to help.

10. Any advice for students looking for an internship?

The one thing that I would say is to be more prepared than everyone else, practise your interview answers in the mirror until you know them off by heart, practise your presentation likewise. Be presentable on the day of your assessment, don’t be late, and as cliché as it sounds, just be yourself!
